Jill Lewis reported:

1) The budget continues to decrease, it is down to bare bones

2) All summer interns were excellent

3) An assistant was hired for Jim McCarthy. Special money used for this position. This person will provide clerical help, database, and going out on travel with Jim to do outreach.

4) NLS is doing an extensive study of guidelines

5) Technology: NLS download program; tech classes at the library are thriving; Jerry Price gave 198 one-on-one classes so far this year.

Irene Padilla reported:

6) Issues with NFB and MSDE -- they know more about LBPH budget. NFB, ACB, DORS, MSDE and LBPH should meet regularly to discuss Library, DORS, Job Squad and how they can work as a team. First meeting this week went well.

Lori Guenthner reported on Youth Services:
7) spoke about "Urban Pirates" program. She has made a lot of purchases for the emergent literacy program. For example, books from Seedlings, board books, large books, tactile manipulatives; lots of puppets. This was all purchased with money from the Friends budget. Mosai Selam is a drummer and his event is coming up with a book club. Lori received her first call ever recently from a teacher in Ocean City, MD. She has her first blind student. She doesn't know braille but wants to do her best, had lots of questions and requested Braille books.

Meeting participants then took a tour of the Digital Studios in the basement of the library, and Yuri Zietz showed everyone how quick and easy it is to download digital books from the NLS catalog to the plastic digital cassettes. He can make 21 at the same time and it takes about 3 minutes!
