The HumanWare 2011 Braille Literacy Scholarship goes to Russell Hinderman!

HumanWare is proud to announce the recipient of the HumanWare 2011 Braille Literacy Scholarship Program. The 2011 winner, Russell Hinderman and his parents, Joe and Heidi of Medina, Ohio, received a Mountbatten Learning System because of the family’s dedication to braille literacy and commitment to provide Russell, who was blind from birth, with every opportunity to become a smart, successful individual. The Mountbatten Learning System is an electronic braille writer, note taker, and embosser with audio output designed as a foundational early braille literacy tool.

HumanWare established the Braille Literacy Scholarship to promote braille literacy because it is fundamental to the success of a young child who is blind. This award is given every year to a family who is dedicated to braille literacy. “Our company strongly encourages braille literacy to begin in the early ages for the many benefits that carry over into other academic skills, such as spelling, writing, and the structure of language, to name a few,” said Dominic Gagliano, Vice President of Blindness Sales at Humanware.

“We selected the Hinderman family because they have fully embraced braille literacy. To support their son who’s now 4, Mrs. Hinderman has taken a braille course and is labeling his toys and household objects in braille.”

“The MB Learning System is an incredible device that will help Russell both academically and socially – by helping him interact with his sighted peers and teachers while achieving his maximal braille potential,” said Mrs. Hinderman. “It provides a way for Russell to express himself, and easily participate in mainstream classroom activities through the MountBatten’s print-to braille and braille-to-print translation features.”

Beyond initially learning braille in a stimulating and stress-free environment, the Hinderman family believes the MB Learning System will provide their son with the means to succeed as he moves into a mainstream classroom. It can be used as a tool that instructors use to provide timely, accessible educational materials, to check work easily and often, and to give immediate feedback on classroom activities and assignments.

After receiving their MB Learning System, the Hinderman family shared their initial experiences in a story and video. Read the whole story here!
