Dear Minnesota Federationists:
☑ Great job to everyone who participated in our 36th annual Walk for
Opportunity —the walkers, check point workers, drivers, food preparers,
door knockers, social media sharers, logistics coordinators, and all who
helped to be sure we had a successful event. A special thank-you to
Michaela Moritz who made sure there were some very nice door prizes to
distribute after the walk, and to all of the Rochester chapter for their
wonderful hosting. Together we have raised over $4,7000 (and counting)
to help carry on the work of the National Federation of the Blind. Great
work, all!
☐ From Cody Beardslee, Minnesota Association of Blind Students President:
Hello students!
Is technology an interest of yours? Do you want to hear ideas on how you
can be successful in school? Would you like to hear input on what others
think about technology? If you said yes to any of these questions, then
this call is for you! Join the Minnesota Association of Blind Students
next Sunday at 8 PM Central time as we will host a technology membership
call. We will be discussing ways on successfully using your gadgets so
you can strive to succeed, innovative technology that you could possibly
get, and more! You don't have to be in Minnesota to participate in this
call; it can be anyone at all. We would love to hear your opinions and
ideas so please don't hesitate to join us!
Here is how you can call in:
Call-in Number: (641) 715-3276
Access Code: 6326673
☐ >From Ryan Strunk, Metro Chapter President:
Cash Prizes for Essays*:* The Metro Chapter invites all Minnesota
Federationists to participate in its annual essay contest. Although
there is not a specific essay question, the essay should be focused on
experiences as a blind person and highlight a positive message or
outcome. The length of the essay should be about 2-3 pages. The
winning essay will be published in the Minnesota Bulletin, and the
writer will receive $75. Another $50 will be awarded in a random
drawing from the rest of the essays, which will also be considered for
publication. Both winners will be announced at the banquet at the annual
convention on Saturday evening, October 21. All entries must be
received by October 11, 2017. E-mail them to Kathy McGillivray at
gilgal63 at gmail.com. Check out the contest rules plus links to the
winning essays here: http://members.tcq.net/nfbmn/contest.html
☐ And speaking of the Bulletin, just in case you missed the mention of
this last week, the Spring/Summer issue of the Minnesota Bulletin is now
available either to read on the Web page or to download as MP3:

→ Remember the annual convention in Brooklyn Park, October 20-22. In
addition to the phone number to call to make hotel reservations, you can
also do it online at this link:

calling (877) 303‑1681 or online here:
http://www.marriott.com/meeting-event-hotels/group-corporate-travel/groupCorp.mi?resLinkData=Nat%27l%20Federation%20of%20the%20Blind%20of%20MN%5Emspnw%60dtndtna%6099.00%60USD%60false%602%6010/18/17%6010/24/17%609/29/17&app=resvlink&stop_mobi=yes
☐ Call your congressional representative and the senators and ask
them to cosponsor the Access Technology Affordability Act (H.R. 1734 and
S. 732). If you aren't sure who your representative is, find the name
and contact information by entering your zip code at
http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/. If you'd prefer, the number
to the Capitol Switchboard is 202-224-3121; from there, the operator can
transfer you.
☐If you use a guide dog, give feedback on your experiences using Uber
and Lyft, and encourage anyone you know who uses a guide dog or other
service animal to do the same: https://nfb.org/rideshare
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back
