[MN-at-Large] Announcing our 2023 Joyce and Tom Scanlan Scholarship Winners

Our 2023 Joyce and Tom Scanlan scholarships have been selected.  As always,
we had a very competitive set of applicants, and the choice was again a
difficult one.

 

This year, we decided to make two scholarships of equal amounts available of
$2,000 each.  Here are our two winners.

 

Elizabeth Rouse is moving to Minnesota this summer and will be attending the
University of Minnesota Law School.  She hopes to use her education to
spread the word that we are not defined by our blindness to more of the
general public.  She wants to do this both through being a good example of a
successful blind lawyer and by advocating for others.  Elizabeth has been an
active member of the National Association of Blind Students for several
years now, and plans to be active in our student division and affiliate
after she moves.  She is already a member..

 

Ben Zheng is attending the University of Minnesota and is seeking an
interdisciplinary degree in Psychology, Neural psychology, and nutrician
with minors in certain aspects of business.  He will be seeking a masters
degree in counseling with an intent to have a counseling practice that
includes exercise and nutrition as  a path to better mental health.

 

Congratulations to our winners whom we will see more of at our national and
state convention.

 

I also want to thank our scholarship committee for their work.  The
committee, chaired by Ryan Strunk, also includes Kotumu Kamara, Alex Loch,
Yadiel Sotomayor, and Anne Naber.  It is not an easy job but they did it
well.
