>For more than forty years, the NFB of Minnesota
>has awarded scholarships to blind students.
>Within the past few years, we have given our
>scholarships a name, the Joyce and Tom Scanlan
>Scholarships. This was done to honor and
>remember our long-time president, Joyce Scanlan,
>and also her husband Tom who was our treasurer
>for forty years. In addition, Joyce was an
>English teacher before she became an active
>member of the NFB of Minnesota, so encouraging
>education was something that was very important to her.

>Here are our scholarship finalists for this year.

>Majed Alhuwayri is a junior at the University of
>Minnesota and he is majoring in Human Resources
>Industrial Relations. His goal is to work in
>international business given his background and
>exposure to multiple cultures and languages. He
>has also been an advocate for other disabled
>students at the University and has been active
>in our Minnesota Association of Blind Students
>for several years. He believes the challenges he
>has faced as a person who is blind as well as
>those faced by leaving most of his family in
>Saudi Arabia have made him a stronger and more capable person.

>Aida Talic is coming to Minnesota this summer
>from Missouri to attend the Minneapolis
>Community and Technical College where she will
>begin her journey toward a major in Accounting
>and Product Management. One possible career for
>her is to help manage her family’s semi-truck
>business. She says that doing this would be more
>than a career path. In her words, “it's a
>familial collaboration and a personal
>triumph.”  She started losing vision in high
>school and she figured out she would need some
>training and help to move forward with her
>education. She has attended the Louisiana Center
>for the Blind, and she has been active in the
>Missouri Association of Blind Students as well.

>Congratulations to Majed and Aida. We look
>forward to getting to know both of you better!
