>Each year, the NFB of Minnesota awards two 
>scholarships in honor of Joyce and Tom Scanlan, 
>both longtime leaders in our affiliate and 
>training center in Minneapolis. We received 
>several applications this year, and the 
>committee had the chance to interview each of 
>them. With gratitude to the committee of Steve 
>Jacobson, Kia Sadler, and Steve Sawczyn, I am 
>excited to share a little information about our finalists.

>Madeline Major is a senior at Armstrong High 
>School. She has also been attending classes at 
>Normandale Community College for the past two 
>years working towards an associate’s degree at 
>the same time as her high school diploma. This 
>fall she will be attending the University of 
>Minnesota Twin Cities where she plans to study 
>sociology, technical writing, and communication. 
>Maddie is an exceptional student who is also 
>dedicated to being a community leader. She is 
>involved in environmental groups at her current 
>school and is a peer ambassador for State 
>Services for the Blind. She is interested in the 
>intersection of environmental justice and 
>disability rights. Maddie has a long-term goal 
>to attend law school in order to gain the skills 
>and knowledge to pursue this interest.

>Heather Kent is currently attending St. 
>Catherine’s University to obtain a degree as a 
>physical therapy assistant. Heather is a 
>dedicated and creative student who tirelessly 
>advocates for equality and access for herself 
>and all those around her. Heather has a 
>fascinating and important career history working 
>as a legal advocate, crisis hotline counselor, 
>and a ski instructor. She is now doing very well 
>with the pursuit of a new career goal. As an 
>active member of the National Federation of the 
>Blind, she participates on both the state and national levels.

and some upcoming chapter meetings.
