Our national convention takes place this year July 3-8 in Austin, Texas. Besides the experience of being in Austin, the convention provides the opportunity to meet blind people from all over the country and to network with people who share your particular interests. Whether you need assistance in getting a job, want to see the latest technology, need tips from other students on how to navigate today’s complicated educational system, or want to meet other successful blind people, the convention is the place to do that. Listening to the presidential report is an inspiring way to get a sense of the many activities and projects in which we’ve been involved during the past year. The address that our president gives at our banquet provides a broad context for all that we do.

 

While many of us attend the convention every year at our own expense, we recognize that finances can sometimes make attending the convention difficult, often when it would be most helpful.

 

The NFB of Minnesota is making available travel grants to attend the national convention this summer. The deadline for that application is May 15 so there is a little more time. The chair of our travel grant Committee is Jan Bailey. Here is a note from her with additional details:

To the extent possible, travel grants are confidential. Details you provide on the application will be shared with the committee, the organization’s treasurer, the organization’s president, and our annual Audit Committee.

 

It’s imperative that you reserve a hotel room for yourself before completing the form. Our room blocks are filling quickly. The JW Marriott Austin is now fully booked, but rooms are available at three nearby overflow hotels: the Austin Marriott Downtown, the Courtyard by Marriott Austin Downtown, and the Residence Inn Austin Downtown.
