Good morning Minnesotans,
I’m writing to provide you with a few quick reminders.
* Our next affiliate board meeting is this Saturday, March 28 at 10am via Zoom. I invite all members to attend!
* If you have not attended an NFB National Convention before but want to join us in Austin this July, the deadline to apply for a first-timers scholarship is April 15.
* Regardless of whether you plan to apply for a grant to attend our national convention, make your hotel reservations as soon as possible!
* The deadline for our national and state scholarship programs are quickly approaching. The national scholarship deadline is March 31, and our state scholarship deadline is April 15.
Join us in Austin for our National Convention July 3-8
Our national convention in Austin is clearly going to be popular. Our room block at the JW Marriott Austin is already completely booked. The good news is that there are room blocks with plenty of space at several nearby hotels, including the nearby, and recently opened, Austin Marriott Downtown. The hotels are all within a couple blocks’ walk to the JW Marriott. Visit our Prepare for National Convention webpage <https://nfb.org/get-involved/national-convention-prep> to explore your options.
You may call 800-627-7468 to book your room at the Austin Marriott Downtown. Specify our room block code, BL1, to ensure you receive our convention room rate.
Have you always wanted to attend an NFB annual convention but have not done so because of the lack of funds? The Kenneth Jernigan Convention Scholarship Fund invites you to make an application for a scholarship grant <https://nfb.org/get-involved/national-convention/kenneth-jernigan-convention-scholarship> . Perhaps this July you too can be in Austin enjoying the many pleasures and learning opportunities at the largest and most important yearly convention of blind people in the world.
The three biggest ticket items you need to cover when attending an NFB national convention are the roundtrip transportation, the hotel room for a week, and the food (which tends to be higher priced than at home). We attempt to award additional funds to families, but, whether a family or an individual is granted a scholarship, this fund can only help; it won’t pay all the costs. In recent years, the grants have been $700 for individuals and $1,100 for families.
We recommend that you find an NFB member as your personal convention mentor, someone who has been to many national conventions and is able to share money-saving tips with you and tips on navigating the extensive agenda in the big hotel. Your mentor will help you get the most out of the amazing experience that is convention week.
Please note that applicants must be 18 years of age by the time of the convention or must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you cannot apply online, you can still apply by writing a letter to me and answering the same application questions. Please contact your local chapter president for assistance.
We will also have a grant available for Minnesotans who have previously attended a National Convention. Details are coming soon from our committee chairperson Jan Bailey.
College students: Scholarship deadlines are quickly approaching!
We have two, annual scholarship programs for college students. One is from our national organization, with the opportunity to win $10,000, and that application is due first. The other is for our state scholarship program, and the deadline is April 15. You are encouraged to apply for both programs if you will be attending school in Minnesota during the 2026-2027 academic year.
