Many of you know my twin sister, Susan Leiker. It is with great sadness
that I tell you that she has stage four esophagus cancer and it is
already spreading to other parts of her body. She is in Abbott
Northwestern Hospital where she will begin radiation treatment and the
doctors will monitor her progress.<br><br>
<br><br>
Some of you have not had the chance to know Susan. Let me tell you a
little about her. We are both inveterate card players. She uses her
iPhone to play such games as Yahtzee, Sudoku and various other puzzles.
<br><br>
<br><br>
We also play cards either in person or on a computer. Our favorite game
is spades. One version of this game requires you to play with a partner.
<br><br>
<br><br>
I have lived in the same apartment building in Minneapolis since 1982.
Susan came to live with me in September of 2016. We determined that we
needed more space. So we moved into a two-bedroom apartment in the same
building. We now had a decision to make. Which one of us would inhabit
the master bedroom and bathroom? I had seniority in residency in the
building; she was ten minutes older than I. I was employed; she was doing
all the cleaning and cooking.<br><br>
<br><br>
We decided to invite a couple of friends over and play spades. She and I
would play on opposite teams and the winner would get the bedroom. I have
blocked out who my partner was that evening. That’s because Susan won and
it has been hers ever since. Her partner, who was not aware of the
competition until after the game, was Sharon Monthei.<br><br>
<br><br>
Susan has three children and five grandchildren. I will share these
stories with them.<br><br>
