Hi everyone,<br><br>
<br><br>
I\u2019m excited to share that Minnesota Center for the Blind is launching
our Empower Seniors program this fall, and we\u2019re looking for
participants!<br><br>
<br><br>
This program is fully funded by a grant from the American Action Fund
for Blind Children and Adults
(<a href="http://www.actionfund.org/">www.actionfund.org</a>), a national
service agency that provides critical support not always available
through government programs. Recognizing the challenges many seniors face
in getting the blindness training they need, the Action Fund has
generously made it possible for us to offer this program at no cost to
participants or SSB. The grant also allows us to provide transportation
for seniors who need it.<br><br>
<br><br>
Here\u2019s what it includes:<br><br>
Seniors will meet twice a week for ten weeks for hands-on training
in:<br><br>
<ul>
<li>Braille for labeling medications, appliances, spices, and creating
personal notes and reminders
<li>Home management strategies for cooking, cleaning, and daily living
<li>Basic cane travel skills for safe and confident movement
<li>Assistive technology geared for seniors, including smartphone use,
NFB-NEWSLINE, downloading and reading books from the National Library
Service, and more
<li>Community-based confidence-building activities such as outings to
restaurants, theater performances, and other experiences shaped by the
group\u2019s interests

<br><br>
This program is open to any senior experiencing vision loss, whether
living in their own home or in assisted living. Everyone deserves the
gift of independence.<br><br>
<br><br>
We\u2019re ready to begin as soon as we have at least four participants
enrolled, at which point we\u2019ll establish a start date this
fall.<br><br>
