[musictlk] Introduction

What do you want to gain from practice? Why bother? I mean, think
about it. Do you want to be a professional? Do you just want to play
for your enjoyment? Do you want to re-establish your technique? Why
would you want to practice.

After you've thought about that, think about how important that might
be. (I do hope you know that I, as an organist, may be writing this to
myself as well.) What would you have to sacrifice to practice? What
are you doing that you could give up for that reason? What do you
think is enough time for practice?

What part of practicing did you enjoy doing the most?

I once decided to practice fifteen minutes a day. I did that for a
while, relearning repertory. I was amazed what I could accomplish in
that short of an amount of time. Also, I enjoyed it enough that
sometimes I practiced more than that. This, in fact, is why I do not
currently practice. I have so much to do that I fear I would let other
things go. But maybe this wouldn't be a bad thing.

The other thing is hat practicing your instrument is like exercising
your body. If you want to do it but you aren't quite sure how much,
start small and then add on as you see fit. Don't try to start with a
lofty goal of an hour or two a day. It won't work.

That's my suggestion. I'm Cindy, living in Iowa and working full time
for the Iowa Dept. for the Blind, trying to finally pass ordination
exams so that I might seek a call as a Pastor of Sacrament and Word.

Hi,
I'm Kathryn from Centennial Colorado. I have played flute from age 11.
I'm 23 now, but I haven't played consistently for many years. How do I
get motivated to practice? I have an intermedient model of a
Gemeinhardt flute but even with a nicer sound and holes in the keys, I
still don't practice. I know some of you are going into the music
profession, so do you have any recommendations? Thanks, and I'll enjoy
being part of this group.
