Hi I hope this story will help you a bit.
My Brother has played in rock bands for many years. I have been out and seem
them play a lot over the years. I have never really been involved in his
bands but all the guys in his first band knew me and liked me. They were a
top notch local band.
Well for years i asked now and then to get up and sing with them.
he was always very polite but always declined my request.
To be fair, He had never heard me sing. and was probably concerned that it
could be a mayjour disapointment to the crowd. Well at least that was my
thought why he declined.
Just last week We had a 50th surprise birthday bash for him.
he and his current band were going to be playing a bennifit concert. Well
that is what he was led to believe.
Well He and the band did play but they played for Us, his friends and
family. It was a great time.

So what does this have to do with any thing?
at the last set, with some help from a friend of his we talked him and the
band into getting me up to sing born to be wild.
Aside from bragging I kicked butt.
My Brother told me afterward that he was glad that we talked them into it.
they had never done the song as a band but they all had played it in other
bands and thought what the heck. and they did a fantastic job.
This might not have opened any doors for a music career for me but I just
wanted to say in a long round about way that persistance payes.
Just keep at it and don't be afraid to ask. The worst they can say is no.
I wish you the best.
robert

Hi, Anne,

Alas, the only way to get started is to get started: if they don't ask you,
you will have to offer:
You'll have to do this for any gig: church or otherwise: they don't offer
them; you have to go after them. so, in your church, find the person in
charge of music and
tell him/her you want to play. do this a couple of times if necessary.
Be persistent: be sweet. Be brave!
When that goes well, you'll have experience and slowly gather connections in
your community and before you know it, they may in fact be asking you.
Peace,

Sheri W-J

Does anyone have ideas as to how to find employment as a church musician, as
soloist, pianist, organist, etc. I'm never asked to sing at the church
where I'm a member. They know I sing, but never ask me. I would like to
find a church that needs a soloist and/or pianist.
