Yeah...  many instruments can have active pickups/preamps.  They usually
take a nine volt battery or two double A batteries.

Does the amp also plug in? does it use vacuum tubes? If so, perhaps the 9V
battery is used for tube bias. Other than that, I haven't a clue!
