Robert,
    I play an acoustic guitar with a Fishman Matrix Hot piezo mic in it that 
uses a 9-volt battery. I change the battery twice a year - on New Year's Day 
and on my birthday (July 17). The battery in my guitar pick-up is only used 
when there is a plug in the end pin. I'm not sure if the same is true for an 
electric guitar or bass, though.
