Hi,

We at Dancing Dots are putting together a webpage of information for blind
users interested to use Pro Tools on the Mac. Our lead tech support and
training specialist participated actively in a recent beta test to make PT
more accessible on the Mac. He concludes that the level of access to Pro
Tools on the Mac is certainly much improved but that it still comes nowhere
need the level of access and convenience available with our CakeTalking for
SONAR access solution to Cakewalk SONAR which is Windows-based.

Our page will give many more details but the short version is that if you
are considering investing in a Mac for audio production, Dancing Dots
suggests that you order one that can also boot up into Windows. You can
have the proverbial best of both worlds since you can produce audio projects
using CakeTalking and SONAR on the Windows platform and then save your SONAR
project in a format which you or others can open with Pro Tools on the
Macintosh. We have begun to offer the full range of Apple computers which
we can bundle with Pro Tools and the other peripherals which Cameron
mentions in his post such as audio interfaces from M-Audio.

Since our page is not yet available, feel free to call us at 610-783-6692
Option 1 to discuss your own needs and interests.

Regards,
Bill

Hi. yes, on the macintosh, the majority of the audio functions in pt are
accessible with voiceover. Pro tools on windows is not accessible.

Currently, on the mac, we do not have access to the midi event list editor,
elastic audio, and other things. However, as far as recording, editing, and
mixing audio, there are vi and blind people using it successfully on a daily
basis.

Pro tools comes in three basic flavors. There is pro tools le, which uses
various USB or firewire interfaces, depending on which package you go for.
They range in price from approx $299 to $3k and include the m box, m box 2,
m box pro, 003 rack, 003 interface and control surface, eleven rack, etc.

Then, you have pro tools M powered. This version requires an m audio
interface like the project mix, fast track pro, or pro fire 26, or, a Mackie
mixer with expansion card, to run. Pro tools m powered along with a
compatible piece of hardware, will run you anywhere from $400 to $2k or
more.

Both of these packages have limitations; limited track counts for mono and
stereo tracks in a project, etc. However, you probably would not have
problems where that is concerned unless you are recording an orchestra for
example... also, you are limited where your sample rate is concerned.

You can run either of them comfortably on a new mac book pro with I5 or I7
processor for example, or, you could go with the new 27 inch Imac with the
second hard drive option and Intel quad core processor. Those machines
would range in price from approx $1500 to $3k.

Now, the big player is the pro tools hd system. This uses PCI cards to
handle processing etc. these systems can range in price from five or ten
grand, up to over $150k. also, you'd need at least a fairly new mac pro
desktop, which would run you at least two to four thousand.

That is a short and general explanation. Please come back with any specific
questions.

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hi all.
Just wondering,
is the latest version of Pro Tools accessible?
If so, what's the price range for the software?

Thanks.

Jorge
