I'm a blind trumpet player who has been principal trumpet with the Allegany
Community symphony orchestra for 6 years. Before that, I've either been
principal or up in the section in a variety of orchestras, symphonic bands,
jazz bands etc. I'd like to use Braille music but a lot of times it's not
available and I go through so much music as a principal player, it would be
tough to keep up with the demand. Usually, I get recordings of my parts in
question played by one of the musicians and work from there. I also have
been able to download some recordings off the J.W. Pepper website which we
get a lot of our music from. That's a hit and miss arrangement however and
you have to work with the material you have available to you. Fortunately,
I have perfect pitch and can transpose easily if I find the music comes in
the wrong key. Up here, I'm principal in the Allegany Symphony orchestra in
the fall/spring and the Aryan Band which is the oldest continually
performing band which has been in continuous existence since 1876.
