how to protect your music?
 1 word.
 Contract.
Ofcorse when you write a song it's always good to copyright it and you would be a full not to do so but after you take that step. let's say someone want's to by your music to use on their podcast as a theem song. Sure, sell it but write a contract first.
Don't sell the writes to your music but give them an exclusive Licens to that track. make sure you aren't selling them the writes to it but just the promittion to air it as their theem song.

you might be saying but Timothy, why should i do all of this, it's just a song. that's true and you can choos not to write a contract and licens that track on a lone bases but you're leaving yourself open for a lot of trouble.
it's always best to cover yourself. if you can't write the contract yourself then have a loyer there. then again, it's best to have one there regardless.
believe me, i've read the last 20 years of copyrights and laws.
i think i should know something about this.
 well, that's about it.
hope you all enjoyed the read.
