[musictlk] Software to create large print sheet music?

Hello Holly,
I have no idea about whether this is a good idea or not; so, please ignore
and delete if you've tried it/heard about it not working etc.

I was just wondering if you might be able to use an IPad. It would be small
enough to fit on the music stand, the font could be customised and the
screen wouldn't be reflective. Pages can be turned with the swipe of a
finger and speech can be turned on and off with three presses of the home
button. So, if it works, it could be a long term music reading solution.

Finale is one music writing/reading software package that has an IPad app.
If the band director already has the music in his computer it may be an easy
transfer. I hope you can work something out for your son. Playing in band
and becoming a proficient reader is a great skill.

Perhaps some of the nonreaders who have played in band may have some
alternative suggestions if you can't find a sight reading solution.

Warmest regards,
Heather Field

Subject: [musictlk] Software to create large print sheet music?

Hi!
We're trying to find a good sheet music solution for our 12 year old
drummer who has some vision. Right now his music teacher is using the
photo copier to enlarge on to 11x17 paper in portrait mode and then
laminating it to give it some stability. It's not working all that well,
it's still too small, the lamination causes glare and it flops around on
the music stand. He's only been in band one year. He loves it but is
starting to get discouraged because of the sheet music issue.

What I'd like to find is a software that would allow some control over the
size of the staffs & to print in landscape mode. My plan is to transcribe
the music from the original book with the software. If I could get the
original 8 1/2 x 11 to print larger than normal to start, the enlargements
on 11x17 should be big enough. Landscape mode would work nicely on a music
stand and wouldn't need to be laminated.

Does such a creature exist? There is a ton of software out there but being
utterly unmusical myself, I have no idea which ones are good or not. Free
would be nice but I am willing to pay for something as long as I know it
will work well.

I did get my hands on a few sheets of large format staff paper and tried to
do it by hand. That was a failed experiment, bad handwriting apparently
translates to bad note writing.

Braille music isn't an option yet as he's just beginning to learn regular
braille. Eventually I would like him to give braille music a try but we
need a right now solution first.

I am aware of the Dancing Dots Limelighter. It's a fantastic piece of
equipment but out of our price range, let alone one for school & one for
home.

Thanks so much!
