Hi all,

Linda and Penny are right. It is important to keep in mind that not
all students will want to learn by wrote, especially if they're
sighted. Of course learning by ear and learning how to quickly play
something just by hearing it and figuring it out on your own are
important skills for any musician to learn, but in the process of
learning these skills aren't usually emphasized until college. The
foundations, like teaching the student how to read music and play
what's on the page, lay the building blocks for everything else that
follows. If you're going to be a good music teacher learning how to
read braille music and teach the basics of braille or print notation
is necessary. Any musician has to learn the rules before they can
break them, and as a teacher you'd want to help your students through
both parts of that learning process.

Especially if you have a blind student, teaching braille music is
extremely important because you want to enable them to study music on
their own, join other ensembles outside of your lessons and access
their music for those groups, or even attend college as a music major
should they choose to do so. I have tremendous gratitude for both my
blind and sighted music teachers throughout the years who promoted the
use of braille music, (and oddly enough my sighted private teacher was
the one who put the most momentum behind helping me learn because she
realized that I would need music literacy in college). Almost all
sighted students can learn print notation in some way, but with the
shortage of tvi's that know or are willing to teach the music code it
is important that those of us who do know it serve as teachers and
help to promote it's use. It provides students with so many
opportunities.
