Gerardo and Darnell,

Welcome to both of you! I am glad to see both of you on this list and look forward to talking about our common passion of music.

I took piano lessons for a few years and still play on occasion, mostly as a hobby. I am now actively taking voice lessons and performing more as a singer, as I have found vocal music to be more of an interest. Like Kelsey, my lessons have always been in-person. As someone who plays and sings primarily by ear, I find it best when I can get a recording of someone--a piano teacher, for example--playing a song on which I am working. I can then learn the song based on the recording, piece by piece.

Perhaps your frustration is stemming from trying to learn the entire song at once. I have also tried to do this many times, and have also found it frustrating. If you have a recording of a song, I would suggest focusing on one part of it at a time. Play a small portion of your recording, pause it, get the song in your mind's ear, and try to play that part--and only that part--on your piano. If you are still having trouble remembering everything in a section, break it down into even smaller parts, even if it's one or two measures at a time. You will likely find that, as you continue to progress, your smaller sections will become larger and larger until you can play the entire song in one hearing.

As to your question about Bill Brown's tutorial series, I have not had personal experience with this tutorial. However, I think the suggestions provided by Poppa Bear and others are sound. The Intro would probably be a good place to start, as it will teach you the basics of piano theory and give you a feel for how the remainder of the tutorial will be taught. You can then move into the songs at your own pace. However, I strongly believe that in-person lessons with a professional teacher is the best way to learn any musical instrument, including the voice. Though the tutorial will teach you the skills, a teacher would be able to give you first-hand feedback based on your own playing. This is something which an audio tutorial cannot provide. If you have the ability, I would strongly encourage you to take the opportunity of taking in-person lessons.
