Subject: [musictlk] From David Baker re. "Visually-impaired musicians' lives" project

Dear Fellow Musicians,

Could you please help me with something? I am currently leading a research project called “Visually-impaired musicians’ lives” (VIML), which is an investigation into the musical practices, participation and learning experiences of blind and partially-sighted people. It is a research project based at the Institute of Education, University of London, UK in partnership with the Music Advisory Service of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and the Royal Academy of Music. VIML is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). I would be extremely grateful for your help in completing our confidential online survey. We want to hear from visually-impaired adult musicians (18 years of over) from across the world, not just the UK. So far, we have been speaking with some really inspiring visually-impaired musicians in the US, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Denmark, and Colombia about their experiences. However, we do need more questionnaire responses to get a fuller picture of visual impairment and music-making. Our interest is in anyone who is visually-impaired and involved in making music at any level of participation (from beginner instrumentalists and singers to professionals, including composers), and we are interested in people involved in various musical contexts and genres (from classical music to jazz, folk or pop).

The survey can be reached by clicking the link below in this e-mail:

Alternatively, please contact David Baker via email to david.baker at ioe.ac.uk<mailto:david.baker at ioe.ac.uk> and we will arrange to gather the information from you by Skype. We would be grateful if any person who is not a UK citizen could indicate their country in the address field at the end of the survey. The questionnaire link allows one response per computer.

We are planning a conference from “Visually-impaired musicians’ lives”, which will take place in London on 6 March 2014. This will be a wonderful opportunity to share project findings, and to discuss everything, but we will also have performances and guest speakers on issues of accessible music technologies, the employment of visually-impaired musicians, score formats, academic research in this field, and various other themes. If you are in London at that time, you would be most welcome to come. If you want to know more about VIML, please visit our website, where I will upload information as the project develops:

Thank you in advance for your time and support with this project, which we hope will make a difference to the lives of visually-impaired musicians of all kinds in the future.

With all good wishes,

Dr David Baker
