And, that's different than your statement of her saying that you shouldn't
use your thumbs. They're two different things.

Meanwhile, in my nine plus years taking piano growing up, I've never heard
of this practice...

I think she told me that it's an issue of comfort.  She thinks it 
would be more comfortable for the student if the thumbs don't 
have to reach the black keys, so we've always just avoided it.
