Hello,
You can enable voiceover independently on your iPod touch (when you purchase
it,) by triple tapping the home button.
The level of assistance that you can/will get from the Apple store will vary
from store to store. Some folks are generally cool, others are not.
If you are going to get an iPod Touch however, I recommend also purchasing
the book from national Braille Press.
It will help you get a feell of what the device can do and how to perform
voiceover commands etc.
The Apple store can't and won't train you or teach you on how to use
voiceover; and they shouldn't so... *shrug*
As far as a tactile screen protector is concerned...
I can speak to this one personally, as it's my company, SpeedDots, that
makes and sells the screen protectors to ATGuys and its customer base.
Can, you use the iOS device without a tactil screen protector? Absolutely,
and both our web site as well as ATGuys says as much.
They can, however, enable you to type faster, and you can use the dots to
orient yourself to the screen and locate things quicker. Because I of course
make and sell them, it's bad marketing on my part if I don't also use them;
however, I can tell you that while we were in process of making them for the
iPhone 6's, I had a phone without a tactile screen protector, and found that
using them for the past four years actually helped me to have really good
muscle memory so-to-speak, and I could locate letters on the on-screen
keyboard without tactile markings.
I not only can type faster, but also do not need to use speech unless I want
to in order to know where the letters are on the virtual keyboard when using
the screen protector.
So I say all of that to say, that no, they are not needed. They will
increase your productivity, should you choose to really learn how to fully
use your device without the aid of a bluetooth keyboard.
I'm not dissing bluetooth keyboards either... I'm one of those people that
uses a little bit of everything. It's about what will get my needs met at
that time the fastest way possible; but personally for me, I don't want to
be in a situation where I can't quickly whip out my phone or iPod and send
an email or text when I'm out and about. I refuse to put myself in a
position where I'm relying on having to lug a keyboard around with me
everywhere and use it for everything. If I wanted that life style, I'd carry
a laptop everywhere. *smile* But, I believe in having as many tools in my
toolbox to get the job done...
I can also tell you that our company is run without the aid of sighted
people, so it is completely possible to apply the screen protector without
help... We do it at every convention and conference we attend, as do the
folks from ATGuys who also cannot see.
Sometimes customers have told us that the Apple or AT&T store is cool about
helping them with that task, and others have said that they refuse to apply
them, especially at the Apple store, because they don't like to put anything
on your device that they personally do not sell.
But, blind or sighted, they don't require rocket science or special skills
to stick on your phone. Anybody can do it, even your parents that you live
with.
There's tons of blind/visually impaired individuals who own iOS devices be
that iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc, so absolutely, they work quite well with
voiceover.
Good luck...

Subject: [musictlk] ipod touch
Hello,
I know this is not exactly music related, but I was hoping
someone could give me some advice. I am considering buying an
ipod touch. I have a nano currently, but it is the really tiny
one, so the screen is also very small and not easy to navigate
without hitting something I don't want. Therefore, before I go
out and make this purchase, for those of you who own an ipod
touch, is it easy to use without vision? Also, how do the tactile
screen covers from ATT Guys work and are they worth the
investment? Finally, how helpful are the staff at the Apple store
in terms of assisting with accessibility features and setting
everything up for me, including putting the tactile cover on? I
have only been to the actual store once and that was just to buy
my nano.
Thank you,
Kelsey Nicolay
