[musictlk] Audacity question

Though Audacity is free and does work well with JAWS, one issue that is
very challenging, especially to those who will want to record multiple
tracks, is latency. Latency refers to the time it takes for the input to
return to the monitor, whether that monitor is a speaker or headphone. This
latency causes the new input on a track to not be synched with the existing
track. Latency is not present when recording directly into a computer;
however, if using an audio interface - something necessary for a really
good vocal input with a condenser mic - Audacity is not a good option.

A better option is Reaper which is compatible with JAWS and MVDA.
Reaper is available for free with an evaluation license for 60 days, though
I have had and used Reaper now for about two years. In the interest of full
disclosure, I was evaluating Reaper for that time, learning more about how
it interacts with JAWS before I made the modest investment of $60 to
purchase it. I have now purchased it and am taking an online class through
CAVI, a technology instruction company that is owned and operated by blind
folks. As I learn more about Reaper, I am open to sharing my knowledge and
skills with others. If anyone on this list wants to network more with me,
please do not hesitate to contact me off-list at

Subject: [musictlk] Audacity question

Hello, everyone:

By way of update, someone snagged the section leader position I was
considering taking, in my community chorus?”a little disappointed, but
generally okay, since the one thing I was unable to do, given the need to
access particular minute sections in the notation and not choosing to learn
Braille music, was asking notation-oriented questions about trouble spots
in whatever we?™re learning. However, the prospect did give me a chance to
seriously think through other challenges I?™d have faced and prioritize
methods by which I could meet them, so thanks for everyone?™s input.

Second: We are working on the lovely Dvorak ?œRequiem,??and have the
Berkshire ?œvirtual choir??CD, but there are several spots I?™d like to get
rid of?”not looking to totally shelve the existing CD because, once I?™m
more comfortable with the material, having the original extra stuff will
give me more of a sense of how our sections fit into the work as a whole.
However, I?™d love to have a second CD, a sort of ?œlearning CD??that omits
whatever doesn?™t concern my voice part, and that leads to a question. I
know someone who uses Audacity and is sighted.
Does anyone know whether it is Jaws-compatible? If so, what could I expect
to have to pay for it? It may not be an expense I can immediately afford,
but for situations like this, worth an investment later. Thanks!

Sandra
