  Hi all, 

 I am not a pro musician or an instructer, however, in my opinion, every one
should learn to play by ear even if they  know how to play music. 

After all it is all about the sound  isn't it?   I  dabbled around for too
many years before I came to the point that I started to do basic scales over
and over so many  times that   when I would hear a song I can  generally
hear a song and some times I will  hear a simple line and will be able to
literally picture the pateren . pick up my bass and play what I just heard.
Now I still struggle with more complex patterns but the more I drill the
scales, the quicker I pick up what I hear. Now if you read music all the
better, when and where you  struggle to find the pattern, you can go to the
music and fill in the gapps. 

 This is all just my opinion bassed on years of my own struggles and
experiances. 

No matter how good you get, never quit spending time doing all the scales
that you know.
