[musictlk] fingering charts for French Horn

She was trying out a horn yesterday nearby here. We’re trying to find one to buy for her very soon. Lessons may be an option, but I’m trying to just get her started however I can. She was finding a series of notes with the varying airflow and hand position fairly well, but not able to get the hang of the valve positions to make much progress. She’s a pretty quick study with most instruments, but she’ll want to have an explanation of how the fingering works as she learns the basics, so I think a chart would be really helpful to go along with probable lessons. Her band instructor may be able to help with her initial understanding as well. I’m not sure how much he’s played the French horn, but he’s a good sax player, and he knows the basics with trombone, trumpet, and such.

School started this week and she can already play the flute fairly well, but she wants to change instruments. Part of what I’d like do is let her read up on the chart and whatnot (a basic descriptive how-to article would be nice) as I try to work out an instrument for her— this will take a little time— the most likely candidate so far is having a little repair work done (it needed a brace soldered back, and I want to confirm the valves are in good shape before we move forward).

Worst case, I’ll adapt a visual chart for her, but I was thinking there must be a source for various fingerings somewhere. Besides, If there is some standard for these charts being made tactile, I’d rather not do this the wrong way...

Thanks.
