I could not agree more. 
I have a soft gig bag for my bass and I do not like it at all. Not to
mention it is not so easy to stuff that ax back in the bag when  the bag is
folding over and flopping around. 

 My  akustic guitar has a hard shell cace that I really like. It is  made of
some kind  of very hard packed foam of some sort and coverd with a nylon
outer shell that has some zipper pockets for things like books and cords and
such 
I have never seen another like it. it came with the guitar.

I can't speak to banjos, but I can speak about guitars.  A good, hard
guitar case, one that protects the instrument from banging up against things
and getting dented, etc,  runs around $100.  You can get cheaper softer
cases, but what you really want is one that is going to protect the
investment.  The hard ones, in my opinion, are the way to go.

I was given a banjo as a gift.

I have never  played one and no pretty much nothing about it. I do plan to
learn.  I can not tell you the brand or neck length or any of that but it
does seem to be what I would think is a pretty standard size and is
basically an entry level model.

I need to get a case for it but the prices at the music store in town were I
thought pretty steep. They wanted over $100. For a basic case I think
actually more like $120.00.

Any ideas where I could look for an inexpensive case?  I don't care about
style or even cosmetic condition if it is a used one. I  just need it to be
protected from me or my cat knocking it over or stepping on it and damaging
it. so basically I just need a shell. Any  ideas would be welcome.
