[MusicTlk] hello

Darnell, Do is the first note of whatever key you're singing or
playing in. There is a different Braille symbol not only for
each note, but for each note value or rest. The C scale in
eighth notes is c dots 1-4-5; d dots 1-5; e dots 1-2-4; f dots
1-2-4-5; g dots 1-2-5; a dots 2-4; and b dots 2-4-5. Add dot 6
to make quarter notes. Add dot 3 to make half notes. Add dots
3-6 to make whole or 16th notes. Fun stuff!

So, let me get this streight. D is Doe in music braille, which
equals middle C. I mean I play by ear. So I learn the songs as
I hear them. But I'm still showing interest in learning music
braille.

 Hi All:

If I remember correctly, I read in Richard Taesch's Braille
music course that, at its core, the Braille music code is based
on the solfege scale. In this case, Ella's theory would make
sense—that is, d represents middle C in the C major scale
because middle C is always "do" in the solfege system. However,
as we all know, solfege varies depending on the key. D is "do"
in D major, C is "so" in F major, etc. Yet, no matter the key,
the note symbols remain consistent. I've always wished the note
symbols in Braille music would correspond with their literary
counterparts, as I think the present system is very confusing to
new readers, even if they are experienced in reading Braille.
But whatever the reason, that's the way it's always been, and I
don't expect that it will change anytime soon. Incidentally, a
friend of mine suspects that Louis Braille, a Frenchman through
and through, simply had a little too much wine the night he wrote
the rules for Braille music. So I suppose we can throw that
theory into the mix if we're only speculating. LOL!

Maybe he used d for C. D stands for "doe", which equals C.

 Hi Debra,

 Welcome to the list.

I'm not sure we know why Louis Braille decided that eighth notes
should be written as they are. He had to start somewhere. It
would not make sense to start with the letter a for a eighth, b
for b eighth, and c for c eighth. Those first letters of the
literary Braille alphabet are used for other things: first
finger, second finger and slur respectively. Learn it as it is,
as a code all its own. Don't think of it as literary Braille
signs first, and you'll be OK.

 Blessings,

 Linda

Why did Louis Braille write eight notes with the dot numbers
that
 he
did? I can find a pattern for braille every not value, such as
quarter notes add dot 6 to the eighth note, etc.; I can't find
 the
pattern for the reason for brailling eighth notes as he did,
even
though the Braille music system is supposed to be a logical
 system.

Welcome, Debra! I think this list would be a perfect one to ask
 questions
about braille music. We have many very proficient readers on
 here, as well
as some who teach the code. Ask away!
