[MusicTlk] hello

Braille music has key signatures that is how you can tell if the pieces tou be played in major or minor. There are also signs for accidentals. But it’s been a long time since I’ve read it so I can’t remember what all that is. Don’t you guys wish that you could just talk to Louis Braille? If I could meet anybody in history that’s who I would meet.

The C scale in eighth notes is c dots 1-4-5; d dots 1-5; e dots 1-2-4; f dots 1-2-4-5; g dots 1-2-5; a dots 2-4; and b dots 2-4-5. Add dot 6 to make quarter notes. Add dot 3 to make half notes. Add dots 3-6 to make whole or 16th notes. Fun stuff!

In this case, Ella's theory would make sense—that is, d represents middle C in the C major scale because middle C is always "do" in the solfege system. However, as we all know, solfege varies depending on the key. D is "do" in D major, C is "so" in F major, etc. Yet, no matter the key, the note symbols remain consistent. I've always wished the note symbols in Braille music would correspond with their literary counterparts, as I think the present system is very confusing to new readers, even if they are experienced in reading Braille. But whatever the reason, that's the way it's always been, and I don't expect that it will change anytime soon. Incidentally, a friend of mine suspects that Louis Braille, a Frenchman through and through, simply had a little too much wine the night he wrote the rules for Braille music. So I suppose we can throw that theory into the mix if we're only speculating. LOL!
