Thanks. That makes sense. My guess was that the cloth was there to clean the
piano with but it seems that this is not the case and I can just discard it?

As a practicing piano tuner who has serviced numerous Yamaha pianos over the
years I can confirm that the felt strip in question is a felt key protector.
Its function is to prevent scratches of the keys in shipment. Often they are
maintained by the owners. There is no reason to continue to use the felt
cover, but it does no harm. Since microscopic dust particles are  in the air
and air filters through the piano's case dust will accumulate. The only
thing to do is to have the piano cleaned by a professional piano
tuner/technician about every 5 years.
