[MusicTlk] Newbie Intro

Hi Michael and Bill,

Thank you for your candid and detailed responses. I am a totally blind individual who depends on Braille. The tablature idea is just to get me started and encourage by learning a couple of songs. My long term solution has always been wanting to learn Braille music.Primary for guitar, but every time it seems as if I'm finding a solution to learn actual chord charts. I come to a dead end. I came across the intro to guitar playing for the blind. Being offered by Texas School for the Blind in partnership with the Austin music academy. But the free audio files that get offered by them gets you started with the Braille files one can download for free or purchase a hard copy for $20. And it leaves one with more questions. Sense they don't cover all of the Braille symbols that are used throughout the book. I found the chord chart that explains how to play each chord of the guitar. As well, as some music MENVI offers to play. But just like TSB. They don't offer explaining for some of the symbols being used. And assume one ought to know them. I am middle-aged and never did developed my ears to pick up the different frequencies for every note. I am learning some of music theory via youtube and questions I take to my music teacher. However I am taking classes through Guitar Center so they know to teach, but have no idea on how to teach the blind. It is why I'm have been in the hunt for a couple of things. First a full step by step tutorial, manual or something that would mainly focus on learning how to read guitar music charts/scores and not tablature. If it does exist. And second a depositary of music for the guitar that can be accessible through Braille. I am hoping to pick up keyboard, chromatic accordion and the bass/ukulele after understanding the guitar. Currently I only have access to a Microsoft Surface 3rd generation and is why I haven't entertained trying out Dancing Dots. Bill would I be able to grab a chord chart from Ultimate Guitar as a PDF and would Dancing Dots be able to translate that PDF to an accessible format. Where I can have JAWS or NVDA read it for me, or having a Braille Display make it accessible. Or would I be able to take it while in Dancing Dots and save the file as a brf or Dux Bury file to then emboss it? If anybody can assist or point me off on the right direction where I won't be hitting dead ends. It would be very much appreciated. Thank you for anybody who may be able to assist.

Hi Luis,

Mike's response is thorough and well-written. I would encourage you or any
musician with low vision to evaluate all possible solutions at your
disposal. As they say, there's a reason they make 24 flavors of ice-cream.

I can only comment in detail about our own solution, Lime Lighter.

* The $2,995 price tag for the model (or configuration) we call Lime Lighter
Leggiero includes all software, the wireless pedal board, and a Windows
2-in-1 laptop-tablet PC which you can use for anything you can do with a
Windows 10 machine not just for running the Lime Lighter suite of software.
If you already have a PC that has the hardware specifications you prefer,
you can order the model called Liberty which includes only the software and
the 4-switch wireless pedal board for $1,595. You can reduce your start-up
costs even further by choosing to subscribe to the software on an annual or
even monthly basis.
* The Lime Lighter approach does not necessitate wearing hardware like
telescopes or the Jordy which can cause significant fatigue when worn for
extended periods of time. Some low vision students like the fact that,
since they can place their 2-in-1 laptop-tablet on a sturdy music stand,
they don't appear any different to the audience members than all of the
other musicians.
* You have the option to read from left to right along a single line or
system of music. But Lime Lighter also allows you to read by measure. As
you press the included wireless pedal, to move to the next measure, the
current measure effectively slides off to the left and the next bar of music
appears roughly in the same place as the previous bar. That means that the
music tracks to your eye and you need not have to move back quickly from the
end of the line to the start of the next line. That activity can sometimes
cause musicians with low vision to literally miss a beat.
* Lime is a music notation editor. It offers the use of "contexts" or
different views of the score. The Ticker Tape context reformats the entire
score to read like a ticker tape, or one long ribbon, from start to finish.

Again, I encourage everyone to find the solution that works for them. But
do consider Lime Lighter and go to
https://www.dancingdots.com/main/demolldl.htm to request a no-cost
evaluation version that you can try for 15 days. If you are a speech and
braille user like me, consider the same offer for our GOODFEEL suite.

Luis

I hear your pain. As a fellow guitar player, let me reply.

First, let's talk about tablature.

I would recommend against learning that system. Tab is probably the fastest
way to start playing the guitar, but it has one major drawback. That is,
you never learn where the notes are on the fretboard. As you point out, tab
shows you the string and fret where to put your fingers, but it doesn't tell
you what notes you're playing. If you learned nothing else and you then
picked up a piece of standard printed music, you'd be lost as far as
translating the notes on the page to the location on the fretboard. Thus,
you'd be OK as long as you could get tabs for the music you wanted to play.
If you couldn't, and all you could get was standard notation music, you'd
likely be lost.

Learning your scales, and even taking formal lessons to learn theory (if you
don't already know music theory) would solve that and other problems.
Learning your scales would show you how to play in various keys and
positions on the instrument. That knowledge is indispensable. You would
then be able to translate the note on a standard music page to the location
on the guitar. I won't kid you. Learning all your scales will take a bit
of work on your part, but the effort will (I promise) pay dividends.

I'm a guitarist and a pianist. I've been studying piano for about four
years. I made the decision when I started that I was going to do it right.
I was going to learn all my scales, and every piece of technique I could
get my hands on. It probably took me six months of hard work memorizing the
sharps and flats in all the scales and learning how to finger them on the
piano. I did similar work on the guitar years ago when I seriously decided
to pick up the instrument. All of that work has paid off.

Second, let's talk about how to see the music.

My first question to you is whether you have any usable vision? I
personally don't have any answers as far as reading the music if you are
totally blind. There are teachers out there that teach to the blind, and I
would suggest seeking them out if that's where you are. You may need to
learn Braille music and then learn to play by feel. I can't speak about
learning Braille music, but I can speak about playing by feel. It is an
amazing thing. I've had to learn to do that to a point with the guitar, and
in a major way with the piano. It blows my mind that I've been able to
learn to do that, but IT CAN BE LEARNED. It will take time, but trust me,
YOU CAN DO IT. It's very liberating when you don't have to look at your
hands. That's as far as I'll go talking about playing as a blind person
because I'm not blind, and I don't know all the issues blind players face.
I'm a low vision player.

If you are a low vision player as I am, then I would suggest looking at a
portable head mounted magnification device. You might look into a glasses
mounted telescope (what I personally use) or a head mounted CCTV (such as a
Jordi, and I may be spelling it wrong). The telescope is an optical system,
whereas the Jordi is an electronic system.

With the telescope, you look through it, and it shows you (in magnified
view) what you're looking at through a small lens. My telescopeis a 6 power
adjustable focus telescope. The scope and glasses together cost about $1200
and it is totally worth every penny. I wouldn't be without it. I see about
a measure to a measure and a half of music at a time when I use the device.
I can also use it for many other things as well.

The Jordi on the other hand is an electronic camera system that you wear on
your head. You point it what you want to look at and it displays a
magnified view of what you're pointing at on a screen in front of your eyes.
You can increase/decrease the magnification level to your need. As you pan
your head back and forth, you'll be able to read across the page. It's been
a few years since I've looked at the Jordi, but as I recall it's about
$3000, maybe $3500. That's a lot of money, but you'll be able to use the
device for more things than just reading music.

I mention these two options because I want to compare them to the Lime Light
solution. I've gone to the website and read the literature. What I can say
is that while this is a very interesting solution (it displays a magnified
image of the music on a portable computer screen) it is expensive. I
believe they have the right idea, displaying enlarged music on a 17" or
larger monitor. However the major drawback would be cost. This system is
expensive. You'll pay almost the same price as a Jordi to display your
music on a 17 inch monitor ($2995 according to their website) and $3495 for
displaying it on a 23 inch monitor.

I'm not telling you to not buy the Lime Lighter solution, but as you can
see, the Jordi would be about the same cost. If you have vision, you
probably can use it for more applications than just reading music. The same
goes for the telescopic system I use, and it's cheaper. Thus, you get a
bigger bang for your dollar. Plus, again assuming you have enough vision,
you don't have to go through the effort of converting your music to MusicXML
or other format.

I personally had a similar idea to the Lime Lighter, of displaying the msuic
on a large computer monitor. However, developing it would take time. My
idea was to purchase an inexpensive 26 inch monitor, a small portable
computer to drive the display, an application program that runs on the
computer to store, read, and display enlarged music on the monitor, and a
foot switch controller to allow navigation. Although I'm a retired software
developer (and I know how I could write the software) this solution will
take a lot of time to develop and market. If I ever did do this project, I
WOULD NOT sell it for $3000. That, in my opinion, knocks too many people
out who can't afford those prices.

I hope what I have written is helpful. I understand your frustration all too
well.

Good luck.

Mike Jolls

Hi there. As one who has recently picked up a guitar and am still a newby on
learning music. I too have been looking for resources to first learn to read
chord charts in Braille if there's such a thing. Still have not came across
a tutorial, or manual to learn Braille chord charts. I have came across a
couple of different books on braille music in general. One is from NBP and
the free one from NLS. Through my searches I have came across Lunar Tabs
which someone else recommended. But still yet to figure it out on how it
works. I recently came across another Android app called SM Music Reader.
Which takes Music XML files and is able to make them accessible to both low
vision and blind. Because again, accessible music is all new to me. I didn't
know nor know how to or from where to get chord charts or scores on to Music
XML format to play around with this Android app. Finally I during the
holidays came across a web based service. Where it can take any GP1-GP5
files and provide simplified tablature in text format. The concept is you
would open the file on this site. And it will provide numbers to the
tablature. You would get 3 numbers. The first one would be the string, while
the 2nd and 3rd would be related to the fret board. As an example. To play
the A on the G string. You would get the numbers 302. Where the 3 is the 3rd
string and 02 is the 2nd fret on that string. Though, besides holiday songs,
I haven't been able to find any gp1-gp5 files of popular songs up on
ultimate guitar. Just PDFs which does nothing for me who can't see to read
the PDFs. The website in case someone is interested on this free project is
as follows.

I'll throw my two cents in. Here's an idea I have, but you should know it
is geared to low vision players, not to the blind.

  1. Have music scanned in, then OCR it to an application that will convert
it to Music XML.
  2. Have an app that would do the following:
     * read the Music XML file and render the music in graphical form (it
displays the staff, clefs, notes, phrase markings, music symbols, etc ..) on
a large monitor.
     * Allow zooming the music up and down, and would re-fit the music
measures to the width and height of a monitor.
     * Take input from Bluetooth page turning hardware so you could page
through a multi-page piece of music by tapping with your feet.
     * Allow marking up the music with notations and associate them with
the music and save the composition and markings back to MusicXML format so
you could reload it when desired
     * Save multiple songs, create a set of songs you want to perform.
     * Load all songs in a set so you're ready to perform the set.
  3. The application would run on a small device such as a Raspberry PI.
  4. The PI would be connected to a large 26" portable monitor, and it
would also be connected to the page turning device.
  5. The total getup would allow you to prepare your music at home, then
take the monitor, page turn pedal, PI to where you're going to perform.
This would be your "Music Stand". You can then arrive at the gig, set it
up, load the music, and play. And, the music would be large enough to
comfortably see at the performance.

There is already a commercial product out there, but it's expensive. I
think the system is in the thousands. My idea would be to sell the software
at a smaller fee, and tell the end user what hardware to go buy and how to
set it up.

Also, I think the current commercial company will convert your music to
MusicXML, but it's expensive for them to do it. My idea would be to find an
app that does that. You compose the music (maybe even in Finale or similar
product) and then use the "Export to XML format" option. With the music in
XML format, you can then ingest it into the application.

This application (at least as I envision it) doesn't exist now. It's
something I'd definitely be interested in, as I'm a low vision musician.
Currently I use a glasses with a telescope mounted into the glasses to be
able to read my music. I can only see about 1 measure at a time. With what
I'm proposing, the whole screen would be magnified and maybe you'd get to
see more than what I'm seeing with my scope.

Anyway, that's my idea for a portable system. If someone could do that, and
it would be a LOT of work, would that be something people could get excited
about?

Thanks.

Hi,

If the tablature notation can be converted to MusicXML, our Lime software
can import the MusicXML and render it as standard staff notation. Once in
Lime, our Lime Aloud accessibility feature can describe each note verbally
as it sounds and play it back to a metronomic click at any tempo. If our
GOODFEEL software is installed, the equivalent braille music notation can be
simultaneously shown on your braille display. It even tracks in sync with
the staff notation during playback. Of course, you can also produce a
hardcopy braille music score.

After just poking around a bit with my favorite search engine, it appears
that Guitar Pro has an option to export tabs to MusicXML. If anybody has
Guitar Pro, could you please export one or two of your favorite tablature
examples to MusicXML and email them to my info at dancingdots.com address? I
would like to import them into Lime and pass the results to GOODFEEL for
automatic transcription into music braille. I will report back to the list.

Hi gang, I am a hobby guitarist and a retired coder and have not ever
found something open source to provide tab/braille music for blinks. I
would be willing to work on a project to come up with something with a
like minded group of other musicians and geeks if there's any interest
in something along those lines.

I know lillypond can produce braille music output from music.xml files
but I'm not familiar what other benefits it has for accessibility.

I also know there is a format and utilities for writing 'abc' to read
the format and write midi files and the reverse. That could be also
useful for producing braille music or tab.

I don't know of anything that reads and writes gpx files but it
wouldn't surprise me if there is something I just haven't found yet.

Anyway I just wanted to let people know I'd be willing to help work on
something if there's enough interest. You can write me off-line if you
don't wish to clutter up this list with the subject kirk at reisers.ca.

files and can save MIDI and PDF, however, LilyPond comes with Python, and
some programs that can run on Python. One of these Python programs can take
a MusicXML file and convert it to LilyPond format; another can convert MIDI
to LilyPond, however, this one produces overly complicated code with
specific note velocities and such; well, maybe the complexity depends on the
complexity of the MIDI file itself. So there are modules for converting
those formats to LilyPond; LilyPond music can be edited in regular text
programs like Notepad. However, I've never heard of a GPX file, however,
LilyPond is open-source, so there are probably Python modules for converting
it to LilyPond; maybe someone wrote a reverse module that can convert
LilyPond to MusicXML, but like I said, LilyPond itself only converts its own
format to MIDI and PDF, but there are so many little modules that there are
definitely files being converted to a
nd from the LilyPond format, but I've never heard of GPX, it sounds like a
format specific to a certain program.
