Dear Andrew,
I find it very synchronistic that you ask this question, as I am
planning to purchase a mandolin for myself. I have been playing guitar for
more than fifty years and would like to add the mandolin to my repertoire,
as it fits well into my acoustic rock and posi music genre. I have studied a
little about the mandolin and have spoken with a few of my friends who play
the instrument.
First of all, the mandolin is tuned in major fifths rather than
perfect fourths like the guitar, with the exception of tuning the 2nd string
which is a major third. The standard tuning is G - D - A -E, the exact same
notes as the violin on which the mandolin evolved. Like the guitar, the
mandolin can be played like a lead guitar by plucking single notes or can be
played like a rhythm guitar by strumming and playing chords. Since the
tuning is different, though, the chord shapes will then be different. Those
I know who play both guitar and mandolin seem to move between the two
seamlessly. This does not mean that everyone will do the same, though, as it
will likely depend upon your skill set and understanding of music theory. I
hope this helps and maybe we can share notes after we pick up the
instrument!
Peace!

Subject: [MusicTlk] learning to play mandelyn
Hi My name is Andrew.
I just had some questions about mandelyn.
I do already play guitar now Do any of you find that mandelyn is pretty hard
to learn how to play if you played guitar for while?
How do you enjoy playing mandelyn?
Can you do cords on a mandelyn like you can on a guitar I understand from
listening to you tube videos that the fingering is different for doing cords
or playing things like G C D for example.
if anybody would like to comment on this would appreciate it.
