Wow that was a speedy response, and thank you.

My nephew is just starting out.  He's 12.  Our family will be hosting Christmas this year, and I thought it would be nice to give him an opportunity to be "the star of the show" around family members (a non-threatening experience).  I play the piano and lay back and play rhythm, and he gets to take the melody.  I want to give him the chance to see what playing for others is like, and hopefully provide a "fun experience".  Having such an event, in my experience, is a good way to motivate, that is if he has the musical talent inside of him.  know in my own experience that if I had had that kind of opportunity, it might have encouraged me to want to play more.  As it was, I didn't have such opportunities, plus I couldn't read the print music easily.  As a result, I didn't really discover my gift as a kid and I didn't start playing guitar in public until age 35 (piano came later).

So I just wanted to give him some opportunity to see what it's all about and see that playing music can be fun.  When you see the "fun" part of it, that's a big motivator, at least it has been for me.  Hopefully he can get an earlier jump on things if he's got the talent.

As I said, he's just starting out, so I'll have to keep it simple.  Your suggestion about keeping the notes in the octave from Bb to the octave above is really helpful.  I'll keep that in mind.  Thanks for the tip.

Hi Mike,
That's right. If the piano is playing in the key of C then the trumpet will read music in the key of D.

Depending on your nephews age and experience, the most comfortable range to play in and where the trumpet sounds best might be from around B flat right below middle C to an octave above that. That would be from middle C on the trumpet to an octave above. Just depends on how long he's been playing and all that.
