[MusicTlk] Looking to Connect with Blind Musicians who Sing or Play in Large Ensembles

Thank you Ella. Yes the email address for the MENVI webmaster is incorrect on the error page that comes up when you try to submit an application. So I resent my troubleshooting message to the email address you provided and am hoping that works. Not sure why the system isn't accepting my application. Definitely a few technical issues.

Yes I work intensively with recordings, both for purposes of memorization of my individual part and to understand the flow of the piece for the whole ensemble. Guess I picked a risky instrument when it comes to not being able to see the conductor ha-ha. Though there have definitely been times where the band is kind of falling apart (happens in community music sometimes), and I am able to hear where most of the band is, play my part confidently as it fits in, and pull the group back together. I should probably think about using sighted colleagues more for cuing. Trumpet ego getting in the way I guess (smile).
Catherine

Hi Catherine, The MENVI webmaster email actually is menvi-webmaster at menvi.org The reason I suggested MENVI is because there's just more likely to be the kind of people you're looking for on that list from what I can tell.

Re: following the conductor. Those are really good questions and hard to answer. For tempo changes, I usually listen a lot and just play it by feel.
I practice my parts with YouTube recordings a lot so I know what notes and harmonies to listen for, even though I know the conductor's going to do it differently. Coming in after a long rest or a tempo change on a fanfare is a bit of a tricky one, and unfortunately I don't quite have first hand experience with this. This is because I'm a string player, so if I'm not 100% sure exactly where to come in, I'll just listen and start a fraction of a second late. This doesn't matter so much in a string section, but since you're playing your part alone, it's a bigger issue. I think the best solution is to have someone cue you in those instances, as you said. Hope this helps.
