You wouldn’t be the first to express this sentiment, however, a MacBook or Mac mini would be just as popular a device as a Kemper, or quad cortex just as expensive and just as likely to sprout legs and walk away from you as a blind person at a gig if you aren’t paying attention or on top of your gear and equipment while at the gig. So I’ll take the independence of being able to set up my own set list of tones so to speak if in that case given the possibilities of disappearance are the same. At the end of the Day the Kemper, Axe Fx, Quad Cortex and etc are a computer with a CPU, Ram, and storage like a Mac. However a MacBook and a small interface and a couple of air steps could fit in a couple gig bag pockets and be out of sight and on my back with my guitar when I am not on stage.
the difference is the Mac has an Operating System we can access outside of the Modeling. Some have also expressed concern over it being a general purpose computer instead of a dedicated computer. To this I once again point out for what a Kemper or etc cost you could pick up an inexpensive MacBook air or Mac mini and lock it down and treat it as a dedicated Amp Modeling unit the way you would a Kemper. Don’t do unnecessary MacOS, App, or Plug In updates till you know nothing is broken, keep it off the net unless you are updating stuff etc, etc. Given the power of apple silicon, a base model of either would probably be plenty sufficient for this tasks and cost less than the aforementioned units.
But I also understand this is out of the box thinking and you miss out on using the same gear and trying all the myriad of preset tones available out there. For the popular units. These days for me I am not so interested in trying everything under the sun and more just want to play write and record stuff. If I can get equivalent quality and the tones I want and the ability to tweak a preset or create one from scratch I’ll take it!.
Just my two cents on this, as a gear acquisition syndrome addict though, I can completely understand the desire for those units and why rigging up your own solution even if it’s just as powerful, if not more so isn’t as sexy.

>> If you like the NueraalDSP plug ins build your own Qua cortex with a Mac and MainStage and a couple of AirStep MIDI controllers. The best part is you aren’t limited to just NueralDSP plug ins but any amp sim you would like to use. Have an amp you want to profile? Use N.A.M to profile your amp or pedals or etc and use them as a plug in in your MainStage set up.
>> I have been Exploring MainStage and feature wise you can get it to do what these Modellers and Profilers do and then some as it possible to trigger backing tracks and the like with it as well.

>>> Hi. I owned the fractal FM three and had no luck with it at all. The Mac and Windows apps are totally inaccessible. It’s pretty ridiculous. I did contact the company and they did not seem interested in working on accessibility not even further librarian app, etc. I currently own the Kemper profiler stage and so far, I can navigate patches on the unit, and, there are many dedicated knobs for things like volume, dry, EQ, etc. as far as the rig manager app for Mac and Windows, with jaws, or voiceover, I am able to update the firmware on the camper, audition, load, and delete profiles from the camper, and that’s about it right now. Still, it’s more access than the other units apps currently provide so it’s something. I really hope the quad cortex becomes accessible at some point. I like a lot of their plug-ins and actually purchased a few although I haven’t really had the time to dig into them yet. If you want a unit that is more blind, friendly, look at the Hughes and Kettner, black spirit 200 floorboard.
