[MusicTlk] Voice lessons, and Braille music

Hi Michelle:

Just a note on reading vocal Braille music on a Braille display which you may already know: Typically the lyric line (sometimes called the "text line") and the music are displayed on 2 separate lines of Braille. This means that, if you're reading on a single-line display, you have to focus on one or the other when you sing. This is why I prefer hardcopy if I can get it, particularly for choral music; I'm not the best 2-handed Braille reader, but a paper copy does at least allow me to track one line while I'm learning the other. I've heard that reading music on the new multi-line displays like the Monarch and the Dot Pad is a great experience, primarily because there are many more cells and lines to work with. However, these displays still haven't quite made it out of the educational and professional "bubble" and into the general marketplace because of their price. In any case, when I get to borrow a Monarch for work, I plan to experiment with reading music on it, so I'll likely have something to report for those who are interested. For now, I'll take a hardcopy if I can get it, though I recognize that I don't have an embosser, so I have absolutely no problem putting it on my Braille display and practicing at home.

On a related subject, I noticed that you mentioned that you are "learning how to use your new Braille display" and technology in general. I work as an access tech teacher for both students and adults, focusing on Braille displays, screen readers, and other accessibility-related skills. I now have a TVI working with me who is a wonderful Braille teacher and who has experience teaching Braille music. Feel free to reach out if that would be of any help to you.
