Deque is a company specializing in accessibility. They have a series of
courses dealing in accessible web design. The cost is very reasonable, less
than five hundred dollars per year.

The courses can be taken on line at your own pace. Anyone who has completed
them has a base line knowledge of making sites accessible. Once you've
demonstrated your basic knowledge, you can advertise yourself as capable of
consulting with companies. You can write to businesses of various sizes
advertising your services. You can also contact organizations of and for
blind people to let them know of your availability. Organizations dealing
with blindness are sometimes contacted by businesses or community
organizations who want to make sure their sites are accessible. Many
blindness organizations either don't have staff who are free to do
consulting or their consultants are drowning in work.

Subject: [nabentre] Need Advice: Access Tach Consultant

I am looking to become self employed as an accessability consultant in my
area with a focus on blindness. Among other things, I hope to advise local
organizations on how to make their web sites accessible. I also hope to
advise schools and other agencies on how they can make their materials
accessible with little or no cost to them.

I do have some questions. What kind of education would I need? I do have a
general studies degree, but is that all I need. I'd also like to network
with other people who are already doing this so I can learn from them. If
anyone has any advice, please e-mail me. Thanks.
