Yes, every business is different. I have also gone through the SBA, and they
will always ask for a Marketing Plan. They will help you write one. Also see
in CA, if your state commission for the blind will help you with the
business, the NY State Commission for the Blind will help in this area, they
will need receipts etc, they do not give loans of credit, but they do offer
up to $15000.00 once to help with marketing, and other business expense this
a 1 time service which they keep a close track of, whether it takes 1 year
to use or 5 years they might be able to help you. I didn't take advantage of
this.

Yes, each person, each state, each business is different. I am proud to be a
woman who is an entrepreneur and have been recognized in working in my
community, as well as in other countries with my business and also with
being with the NFB.

But I was only trying to give you advice from one woman owned business to
possibly another woman owned business.

Yes Woman are still considered a minority, even though there are woman who
are CEO, COO, etc of huge corporations, but we are still the minority.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can have the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.

Sarah,

Never accept the comments of one person as fact. This is the experience
Cheryl has had. Your network and contacts will be totally different. Your
drive and zeal will be different. Your product/service will be different.
Each and every business is different. What works for one won't work for all.

Always keep your mind focused on that idea that it only takes one yes to
push you on your way. It may feel like you're searching for a needle in a
haystack. But, you only have to find one. If no one has the power to stop
you without good reason, you can succeed. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sarah:

Try Credit Unions, etc. They will not give anyone lines of credit unless you
have been in business for at least 2 years. Starts up are risky and 9 out of
10 times they will not give you anything.

You also need to have collateral - House or something that is worth the
amount of a small business loan.

I have been through this before as a woman, who is disabled that owns her
own business.

I started little by little, got the training on my business, I do have a
business background from college.

I also do not have much overhead since my business is from home. I am able
to do talk to clients on the phone, through skype, and visit my clients
locally in my community, but we have clients all across the country as
well.

Grants are out there but they are hard to come by.

Small Business Administration is always looking to help especially woman and
those with disabilities, because there is x amount of money to be found for
our demographics. But you will need help finding it. SBA will also help with
a marketing plan, which you need way before you even think of opening any
kind of business.

You should have a 5 year plan as a start.

If you need any help, I might be able to help you, but NY is definitely
different than CA.

Good luck.

Hello,
I'm looking for financing resources for small businesses. Does anyone know
of any sources for low-interest loans for women and/or people with
disabilities (blindness) who are starting a business? (We have excellent
credit.) Also, in case it makes a difference, I am in Southern California.
Thanks,
Sarah
