Hi Sarah,

Taking the Braille transcribing course takes anywhere from 12 to 18 months.
Material is submitted in hardcopy Braille or electronic Braille by email.
You must have your own equipment such as Braille paper, braillewriter, slate
and stylus, computer with Braille display, a free program called Perky Duck
available at www.duxbury systems.com. In order to be a Braille proofreader,
one must take both the Braille transcribing course and the Braille
proofreading course. Braille transcription course is 20 lessons in which the
final lesson of the transcription submits a 35 page manuscript such as a
book that have not been available anywhere. The Braille proofreading course
takes 3 to 4 months. Some people may be able to take the Braille and
proofreading courses in as little as 9 to 12 months. This may differ from
individual to individual. I am a certified Braille transcriber and can teach
the course by mail and email to students who want a local instructor.
Although I am in Cincinnati, Ohio, I work fulltime as a Braille proofreader
at Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. I can be reached
in the evenings or weekends at home. My number is 513-931-7070. My email is
lhall007 at cinci.rr.com. I hope to see you at the NFB National Convention in
Orlando, Florida.
I love to talk with you and help you reach your goal.

Sincerely,

Lisa Hall

Subject: [nabop] braille transcription and proofreading career information

good afternoon. I am considering a career as a Braille transcriptionist or
proofreader. I am totally blind and have been reading and writing Braille
all my life. How long does it take to complete the braille transcription and
proofreading classes? are the classes offered in the Amarillo, Texas area?
What equipment will I need? Since I already know Braille, should I just take
one course? What would have the best employment opportunities between
transcription and proofreading? what is the average annual salary? Could I
find employment in the Texas Panhandle? Feel free to email me off list.
Thank you.
    Sarah Harris
