[nabs-l] electronic texts

Elizabeth,

Often times if you contact the publisher of the text book directly, they
will provide you with an electronic copy. Some require you to provide proof
that you have purchased the book, some will simply email you a file and
others will not help you at all. It is somewhat hit or miss, but I have had
a lot of success with that approach in the past.

One other thing you might consider: Many schools have extremely fast
scanners in their libraries which are open to use by students. Many can turn
hundreds of pages of printed text into a series of pdf files in a short
period of time. Simply take the pdf's and run them through an ocr program
like Kurzweil to get them into a format you can work with.

I agree with you that electronic texts beat audio hands down.

All the best,

Sean

Hi Everyone! I'm wondering does anyone on this list know Jerry and Pam from
California. I met them at convention back in July. Due to technology issues
I lost their contact info. So if anyone know sthem, or could give them my
contact info that would be great. Pam's last name is Chase, and I don't know
Jerry's last name. I met both of them shortly before the Student Devision
meeting.
Thanks In Advance!
Merisa

Hello All.
A few weeks ago Arielle posted up an announcement which was originally
posted on the GABS list. I thank her for it, since this way, a lot of
Georgia Students who are not signed up on our mailing list got the
announcement. However, the For-shadowing college success program,
which is designed to allow a high school student to shadow a college
student for a day, is only for the state of Georgia. I have been
getting answers from other interested students, who unfortunately are
in other states. I am so sorry for the confusion.
However, if this is something that other high school and college
students are truly interested in pursuing, speak with your state
student division. I think it's a great way for high school students to
get a taste of what college life is like. If you have any questions,
or want to know more details for your student division, please feel
free to contact me. My information is on the bottom of this email.
Thanks so much.

Hello List,

I have been working with my disabilities office to receive my textbooks in
an alternative format, however this has proven to be a rather frustrating
and unreliable process for obtaining my textbooks. Does anyone know of a way
that I could somehow bypass the disabilities office to obtain my textbooks
in an electronic format? I?ve already tried looking for them on bookshare,
but I did not have any luck in finding them there. I know that RFBD is a
great resource, but I?ve noticed that they don?t typically spell out words
that might be important when taking tests or exams. Since I?ve never been
really good at spelling, I would prefer to have access to an electronic file
rather than recorded audio. Does anyone know how I could go about obtaining
digital versions of my textbooks without going through my disabilities
office?

Thanks,
Elizabeth
