Cindy,
To put JAWS in sleep mode, first open the particular application in which 
you want jaws to sleep in. Then press insert plus 6 on the numbers row to 
bring up the configuration manager. Then pull down the set option menu and 
go down to advanced options and press enter. The first option should be a 
checkbox to have jaws sleep for that application. Check this option and 
press enter. Then press control S to save the config file. At least this is 
the setup in jaws 7 and it should be similar in other versions.
