Joshua,

It takes some practice, but it can become quite easy to write with the
volume muted on the Lap Top.

I write fiction, and the Jaws becomes incredibly distracting for the
flow of words in my head, so I've learned to write with the volume
muted.

It might be something to practice over the winter break; at first,
you'll make lots of mistakes, but as you become more comfortable,
it'll get easier and easier.

This would allow you to take the Lap Top and take notes independently.
