Speaking of streaming Convention, what's the link to listen to it? I =
can't
go this year. Dang summer courses! **hahaha** Also, what week night is
the banquet? I'll certainly listen to that, even if that's all I have =
time
to listen to!

Thanks,
Serena

We stream it so people who can't attend the convention can listen=20
to it and still keep up to date on all the action that happens=20
there. Face it, some people just can't go to convention. You=20
know, that whole thing about 70 percent of blind people being=20
unemployed. Employment generates income, and sadly, a lot of=20
blind people currently don't have it.

Well,
if the real deal is being at convention then why stream it?

Right, and I will be sure to cast my vote for as many people=20
whose names I happen to know as possible. No, you=92d need to=20
manage passwords and data security. There would be issues such=20
as validity and integrity of the ballot (who=92s observing to=20
ensure the votes are not tampered with, etc.?)

What you are looking for is not proxy voting, but to change NABS=20
elections from being held at convention to being held online. =20
That means the elections process would need to happen (along with=20
any runoffs and revotes) prior to convention so that the newly=20
elected board members can meet with the old and arrange the=20
transition plan as best they can.

If elections, why not resolutions and other business as well? =20
Why would we then send delegates from the states to vote? This=20
would be a fundamental change to the organization as a whole, and=20
one that could be exploited by those who have an axe to grind=20
against the NFB. Without becoming too confrontational, suffice=20
it to say that such individuals exist.

It would also degrade our national convention from a=20
policy-making body to the status of a trade show for blind ghetto=20
tech. I=92m not sure you=92re going to find support for that amongst=20
Federationists at large=97particularly since in order to do so you=20
must first convince those Federationists who will be attending=20
Convention because it is a policy-making body they wish to be=20
part of that it should no longer be so.

You would not have my support, even though I have only been to=20
two non-consecutive conventions now, because I wouldn=92t want to=20
see what naturally comes from the application of your suggestion. =20
To me, going to convention is ABOUT something, whether I can=20
attend or not. I for one am not willing to give that up.

That said, though I may attend the NABS meeting if I am not=20
needed elsewhere, I will not be voting. I am not a student=20
anymore, as I said, and NABS policy should IMO be set by those=20
who are.

 So would I.

A web based system could easily be developed, that's for sure. =20
I would be willing to help with that.

This is only theory to be aprooved--the web team would have to=20

I'm sure we could make sure only absent people vote in some way=20
such as having to enter with your name, and the site=20
disqualifying you when you enter your vote if it sees that you're=20
present.
This is where the database of contact information would come in=20
handy.

In theory this is a good suggestion. But lets be realistic=20
here. This would
be a complicated process of tallying the votes. If the students=20
were to do
this, the general convention would want this too. Its sad that=20
those who
can't be there can't vote, but that is where those who can't be=20
there,
should get involved to elect those who they feel would do the=20
best job
 possible.

Say if you were to have a online way to take votes, how are you=20
going to
distinguish from those who are really not going to those who are=20
going to
convention but who want to vote and add votes to a particular=20
person
 running.

Now correct me someone if I am wrong, isn't it true that you can=20
run, not
necessarily be there, and be elected? Or must you be present?=20
Different
 divisions do this differently.

Subject: [nabs-l] proposition for amendment to constitution

 Hello all:
I want to propose the following amendment to the constitution,=20
to article
 IV.

 ---

 Voting

Due to the fact that there are people who will not be present at=20
the
convention due to issues beyond the membership's control, but=20
who have paid
dues and do therefore, retain their right to vote, the NATIONAL=20
ASSOCIATION
OF THE BLIND shall henceforth recognize
these members by allowing them to vote, in such methods as are=20
legal and of
good practice, in all elections pertaining to the business of=20
this
 organization.

 ---

 end of amendment.

The defense I put forth for this amendment is simple: if we are=20
to be a
democratic organization, and if we are truly the "voice of the=20
Nation's
blind" we must realize there are students who will not be able=20
to attend but
who have paid dues, and these students must be recognized and=20
given the
chance to vote in elections. If not, we are violating our own=20
constitution
as article IV is doing as of this writing, by eliminating those=20
members who
cannot attend convention, and therein setting only a certain=20
portion of the
 student membership to vote.

 Jorge
