You can double tap the Edit button and then scroll through your messages. Each message you double tap gets selected. You can move all the selected messages to the trash folder. This is more efficient because you can move 20 messages instead of one. Once in the trash folder, you click Edit again and flick along the bottom row. There, there's a button called Delete All. Double tap that, and all the emails in the trash folder will be deleted.
