The European Parliament will require hybrid cars to be equipped with 
an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). The sound system is 
intended to help pedestrians, particularly those who are blind or 
have vision impairments, know when the vehicles, which make little 
noise, are nearby.
