[nabs-l] Getting a Mac for my birthday, recommendations wanted

I have  VMware Fusion but it's a pain  on the processor. I imagine that parallels would be too. Although I do have a standard hard drive so that could be part of it, as solid-state drives managed to run more quickly. but for me VMware just maxes out my processor so that when I turn on voice over so I can check Skype chats or something it is really really slow.
