Since I'm getting one, then my final question is how do I access the equivalent of the Windows Start Menu?

Actually, assuming your friend is using the standard Apple Mail App and the MacBook's built-in keyboard or an external keyboard with standard Apple layout, the keystroke to reply to an email is Command+R and the keystroke to Reply All is Command+Shift+R.
