[nabs-l] ENC 1102 class Research Paper Topic

I know that the NFB is helping with a lawsuit concerning a college student
in Arizona at Mesa College one of the Mricopa Community colleges. His
English instructor did not want to have a blind person in her class and
dropped him form the course.

I have not noticed any yet since returning to school last January. Back in
the mid 90s I was attending San Deigo Statue University studying computer
science. I was getting A's. I am legally blind so I was using large print
for exams in the classroom, used monocular and was quite independent in my
courses. I went to speak with the dean about possible changing my degree to
computational science and was told "I can't imagine any job you could do".
A few years before that I was in a Computer Science and Information Systems
certificate program at a community college. This program was sponsored by
IBM. CA Voc Rehab and the college. The program was for persons with
disabilities and we had our own classroom with all the assitive technology,
signers for the deaf student etc. Each student was assigned a mentor form
the business advisory group. In my first phone conversation with my mentor,
he said, "How can you be a programmer if you can't see?"It was a
condescending tone and one I knew was not to understand "how". He was rude
and I knew no matter what I said he would not believe someone with a visual
impairment could work as a programmer. I was the only student of the 25 to
get a 4.0 in the program yet just hearing I was visually impaired
automatically umped to the conclusion I could not do it.
