Yes, and I think there's also the fact that many of us don't share
blindness with our families, but most African Americans share their
race with their families. The messages we get from our families that
trap us in fear and passivity are a major part of our collective
struggle. Of course, racial minorities experience similar messages
from the broader community, but at least they can turn to their
families for support and nullification of the stereotypes to which
they are subjected.
