[nabs-l] voting

Hello Sophie,

Something I did the first time I was old enough to vote that
might help you is to go to my city clerk's office and ask this
question to the clerk. Not only is this a good way of finding
out how things are done in your state (as Elizabeth says they
vary), but because I then had a personal relationship with the
clerk she made sure that the accessible machine at my poling
place was set up, and I've never had a problem voting. When they
know ahead of time that a blind person wants to vote, election
workers tend to be more than happy to accommodate them, but for
instance where I live there are seven precincts, and there's only
one other blind person who uses the accessible machines.
Absentee ballots as far as I know are never in Braille. Some
states are moving to online voting though, and I know the NFB is
working to try to make that accessible.

I hope you have a great first experience voting!

Best,
Karl

Subject: [nabs-l] voting

NABS friends,

I'm turning eighteen this fall, just in time to vote in my
state's senatorial elections. And I was wondering, how do blind
people vote? D we enter a voting booth with a friend or pole
worker and just tell them what buttons to push? I might be making
this up, but I might have heard something once about how blind
people can get absentee ballots sent to them in braille. Thanks
in advance for your answers!

Yours sincerely,
Sophie
